Repair Tool
Windows XP offers a new tool that replaces the winipcfg.exe utility found in previous versions of Windows 9x.
To access the Repair tool:
- Select the Support tab in the Status window
- Your current IP Address is displayed
- If the IP Address displayed begins with 169, or there is no IP Address displayed, click on the Repair button
- If the IP Address displayed begins with 192.168, you may have a router installed and will need to check it's connectivity
- This will query our network for a valid IP Address. If you then see an IP Address that doesn't start with 169, click Close
- To view more information on your network settings, select Details
- The Network Connections Details window will appear
- You can view additional information, such as your DNS and DHCP server settings, along with your current IP Address lease
Ipconfig
Windows XP was developed using the Windows 2000 kernel. Like Windows 2000 and NT, XP offers the Ipconfig (IP Configuration) utility. Ipconfig displays your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.
To run Ipconfig:
- Select Start -> Programs ->Accessories ->Command Prompt
- The Command Prompt dialog box will appear
- Type ipconfig /all at the prompt
- Your network settings will be displayed
- To release your current IP Address, type ipconfig /release at the command prompt
- A confirmation indicating that your IP Address has been release will appear
- To query our network for a valid IP Address, type ipconfig /renew at the command prompt
- Your network settings, including a new IP Address will appear
- To close the window, type exit at the prompt
